Nashville, Tennessee – Because August 2020 is the time we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote, the Listening Room’s Song Suffragettes hosted a month-long special live-stream event with their talented singer/songwriters along with some very special female guests.
The women-led singer-songwriter collective enlisted special guests in August for weekly shows sponsored by the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission (WSCC), a federal organization tasked with curating digital programming to commemorate August as National Women’s Suffrage Month.
In addition to the regular songwriters from the Song Suffragettes, the Listening Room and the live-stream audience was entertained by Lindsay Ell– August 3, Maddie and Tae– August 10, Ashley McBryde– August 17, and Runaway June– August 24.
Each week, the guest joins a cast of rotating Song Suffragettes players. Songwriters Carter Faith, Chloe Gilligan, Julie Williams, and Raquel Cole joined Ell on August 3rd while Erin Grand, Stevie Windward, Bree Doster, Ava Suppelsa performed with Maddie and Tae on August 10.
Ashley McBryde performed on August 17 and was joined by Kalie Shorr, Caylee Hammack, Kasey Tyndall, and Mia Mantia while Runaway June sang alongside Jeanna Paulette, Trannie Stevens, Emily Landis, and Mignon on August 24.
Each night, Nashville teen, Mia Morris, backed up the Suffragettes on Cajon, and also performed her original hit, “Stacey’s Song” which is a follow-up to Fountains of Wayne, “Stacey’s Mom.” Country shredder Lindsay Ell was featured on the song the night of August 3.
“Music holds an important place in the history of women’s fight for the vote — like in all social movements, music helped to inspire and unify the suffragists who were dedicated to expanding American democracy. These activists not only secured the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment, but they also broke barriers and opened up new opportunities for women for generations to come,” WSCC Executive Director Anna Laymon said.
The WSCC was excited to partner with the Song Suffragettes in August to celebrate Women in Country Music with weekly live-streamed shows. You can catch highlights of each show and many other performances on their YouTube channel.
